Chief Legal Officer Chat: A conversation with JP Son of Verbit

As an AI-powered speech intelligence company, Verbit knows the transformative power of innovative technology. JP Son, Verbit’s Chief Legal Officer, and his legal team were keen on finding a contract management provider who could solve their long-standing pain points with contracts, while demonstrating a clear commitment to incorporating the latest in AI technology to bring value to its clients.

After evaluating multiple vendors, Son found Pramata and discovered a partner whose vision for AI-enabled contract management matched Verbit’s own forward-thinking approach.

We sat down with Son to chat about his experience searching for the right CLM, what eventually brought him to choose Pramata and how things have changed since making the switch. You can read more about Verbit’s journey in the full case study here.

What were the main challenges that led you to look for a new CLM solution?

Son:  When I joined Verbit, we needed a CLM solution to reduce friction in the sales process, streamline M&A due diligence, and efficiently ensure compliance with contractual obligations.

The solution had to be fully functional yet intuitive enough for our business teams to adopt seamlessly. Robust clause extraction capabilities were a top priority, particularly given the need to organize and manage contracts from multiple M&A transactions.

With the rapid advancements in generative AI, it was clear that selecting a partner committed to staying at the forefront of innovation was essential. We needed a solution that not only met our immediate requirements but was also capable of evolving alongside the fast-changing landscape of AI-driven capabilities.

What was your evaluation process like, and how did you discover Pramata?

Son: We explored various sources to understand the current state of the market, including insights from the Tech GC community. When I first came across Pramata through Tech GC, I decided to take a closer look at their solution, and I was immediately impressed. The team really knew what they were talking about and I could tell they knew the legal industry and the types of challenges legal teams like mine faced daily. I was not only impressed with the product itself but Pramata’s approach to AI was what I had been looking for from a CLM.

What stood out about Pramata’s team compared to other vendors?

Son: In the tech world, especially with CLMs, it’s rare to find a team where the CEO and much of the leadership is still there after 17+ years. When I saw that at Pramata, it was clear the team was in sync on their vision and strategy. It wasn’t just about making a sale – they truly understood the pain points I had as a Chief Legal Officer. Everyone I met from Pramata made me feel as though they were truly ready to partner with their customers, which is an important part of what I wanted in our next CLM provider.

How important was AI capability in your decision-making process?

Son: Having a strong AI vision was crucial for us. We noticed that some vendors rushed to release generative AI features, while others took a “wait and see” approach. Neither was ideal from our perspective. Pramata stood out because of their thoughtful approach—they took the time to deeply understand customer needs while moving quickly and iteratively to deliver meaningful solutions. This balance of speed and intentionality was exactly what we were looking for.

Can you give some specific examples of how Pramata has improved your operations?

Son: Tasks that used to take 30-45 minutes, or more, now take just 5 minutes. For example, when my operations team asked if we could migrate customers based on their legacy contracts, we could quickly analyze thousands of contracts for specific clauses. I also regularly use Pramata’s Gen AI to generate contract amendments in seconds instead of the usual 20-30 minutes it would take to do it manually. The AI is truly getting there in terms of accuracy and it’s very exciting.

What feature has been most valuable for your M&A activities?

Son: The automated hierarchy organization has been a game-changer. We have a complex corpus of contracts from M&A activities, with parent contracts, amendments, SOWs, and addenda. Pramata automatically creates hierarchies at the account level, pulling from Salesforce and organizing everything clearly. We hadn’t seen this capability from any other provider.

How has Pramata’s contract AI functionality compared to your expectations?

Son: It has exceeded our expectations. We can search through thousands of contracts for bespoke clauses quickly and accurately. We don’t have to know exactly how a clause is worded to find it either. The natural language AI understands the meaning we’re looking for and will find clauses that fit within that context. Additionally, the AI-powered redlining capabilities are light years beyond what was available even a few years ago. When Pramata says they could do something, they actually deliver on it.

How does Pramata align with your company’s broader technology strategy?

Son: As an AI-powered company ourselves, we needed a partner that matched our innovative philosophy. Companies across the board are looking at how to use AI to work more effectively, consistently, and efficiently. Pramata exemplifies this approach, particularly in how they’ve implemented AI to solve real business problems.
